The Last Ranger – Peter Heller

Featuring Enforcement Ranger Ben Hopper, Heller takes us on another rough guided tour in one of Yellowstone Park. In this backwoods thriller we learn that a Ranger is a mix between cop, guide, peacemaker, fireman, campground patroller, wildlife protector, and rescuer. What Ben brings to the mix is common sense, a good heart and a touch of Robin Hood in dealing with some of the many miscreants. Dominating the plot is the poacher who is harassing a locally known bear and killing wolves. A resident wolf biologist has been in confrontations with the suspected poacher and the tension between the two culminates in some powerfully exciting moments for our ranger who happens to be in love with the biologist. If you don’t have the chance to visit a national park in the West this summer try this page-turning thriller with the whiff of grizzly coming off the pages as an alternative.
