SUMMARY:Nadine Strossen Author Talk and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Author Talk by Nadine Strossen\, professor of Law at New York Law School. \nIn her new book HATE: Why We Should Resist it With Free Speech\, Not Censorship Nadine Strossen\, president of the ACLU from 1991 to 2008\, argues that expanding free speech\, not limiting it\, is the solution for changing the hearts and minds of those who espouse hateful ideologies. She dispels many of the myths and misunderstandings that have permeated the debates about what constitutes “hate speech\,” including what is and isn’t protected language\, and affirms that we don’t have to choose between civil rights and civil liberties\, or between free speech and equality. Strossen’s powerful argument promises to elevate the conversation around why freedom of speech cannot mean freedom to express popular sentiment only. We must tolerate all speech even when it supports intolerance\, or we may find we’ve given away our own right to speak against it. Nadine Strossen is a renowned public speaker\, committed to the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Books on the Common\, Ridgefield Historical Society\, Keeler Tavern Museum and the Library. \nNadine Strossen dedicates her talk at the Ridgefield Library to the memory of her dear friend\, Mary Rindfleisch. \nPlease register. \nLesley Lambton 203-438-2282 lalambton@ridgefieldlibrary.org \n\nMain Program Room

SUMMARY:Ben Goldfarb Author Talk and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Ben Goldfarb discusses his recently released book Eager: The Surprising\, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter. \nIn Eager\, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong\, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America’s lakes and rivers. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: streams eroded\, wetlands dried up\, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today\, a growing coalition of “Beaver Believers”—including scientists\, ranchers\, and passionate citizens—recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier\, for humans and non-humans alike\, than those without them. \nBen Goldfarb is an award-winning environmental journalist who covers wildlife conservation\, marine science\, and public lands management\, as well as an accomplished fiction writer. His work has been featured in Science\, Mother Jones\, The Guardian\, High Country News\, VICE\, Audubon Magazine\, Modern Farmer\, Orion\, World Wildlife Magazine\, Scientific American\, Yale Environment 360\, and many other publications. He holds a master of environmental management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and is a 2018 North American Congress for Conservation Biology journalist fellow. \nThis program is part of The Ridgefield Library’s Libraries Rock adult summer reading program that is made possible thanks to the Friends of the Library. and is co-sponsored by the Library\, Books on the Common and Ridgefield Conservation Commission.
