SUMMARY:Author Talk with Janet Ettele: "How Joyous Effort Works"
DESCRIPTION:Part instruction and part story\, How Joyous Effort Works artfully weaves actual verses from Master Shantideva’s chapter on Joyful Effort from The Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life. “Janet Kathleen Ettele’s How Joyous Efforts Work introduces Buddhism interweaving it with stories of our daily life. I hope this book enables the general readers to get a better understanding of the Buddhist teachings\, getting conviction not because of faith\, but due to reasoning.” –His Holiness the Dalai Lama (an excerpt from his foreword to this book). \nTroy\, a young man in his early twenties who has struggled with substance abuse and a quick-fisted temper\, seeks to extinguish his habits of the past under the guidance of a Buddhist sage. Continuing his journey with the theme of the previous three books: “When the student is ready the master appears\,” Troy meets Jules\, a wise teacher and a master luthier (builder of string instruments). This touching story of Troy’s journey presents one of the world’s most profound teachings on compassion and wisdom. \nThis touching story of Troy’s journey presents one of the world’s most profound teachings on compassion and wisdom. Set in present day New England where the characters’ ordinary lives and challenges are recognizable as being similar to our own\, we find that it is not necessary to be Buddhist to benefit from the teachings in this story. \nJoin us at the Ridgefield Library\, Sunday March 30th at 2pm\, books will be available for purchase and signing! \n  \nWatch the book trailer for How Joyous Effort Works by Janet Ettele below!

SUMMARY:Author Talk with Ira Joe Fisher: "The Birth of Snow"
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Ridgefield Library\, March 26th at 7pm\, for the celebration of Ridgefield Poet Laureate Ira Joe Fisher’s latest book\, The Birth of Snow. \nThis lyrical poetry collection offers an evocative exploration of life in Annville and the enduring rhythms of rural America. Through skillful and heartfelt verse\, the poet captures the rich texture of small-town existence\, painting intimate portraits of its people and their stories. Seasonal changes\, particularly the stark beauty of winter’s snow\, serve as a recurring motif\, evoking both the passage of time and nature’s unyielding presence. These poems thrive on quiet moments of observation\, transforming the seemingly ordinary into something deeply resonant. \nBalancing wistful nostalgia with sharp\, clear-eyed insight\, this collection weaves a vivid tapestry of place and time. It celebrates the enduring beauty found in life’s quieter moments\, offering a profound meditation on the interconnectedness of people\, place\, and the natural world. \nBooks will be available for purchase and signing!

SUMMARY:Battle of the Books\, featuring Jim Mustich
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Idea \nAn event for book lovers\, the 1\,000 Books Battle of the Books is a program offering a platform for five passionate readers each to make a case\, in front of a live audience\, for a book they think should be on everyone’s TBR list. At the end of the Battle\, audience members vote for the book they most want to read or reread\, a winner and runner-up are declared\, and copies of 1\,000 Books to Read Before You Die and all five books on the program are offered for sale. \nThe Format \n5 x 5. In other words\, a short program in which five people each have five minutes to talk about a book they love in front of a live audience. The venue can be anything from a medium-sized room to an auditorium\, depending on the size of the audience. With the 5 x 5 format\, the actual program part of the event should run no longer than about forty minutes; if written ballots are collected and tabulated\, the program might run to one hour. \nThe Event \nIt’s like a poetry slam. Jim Mustich\, author of 1\,000 Books to Read Before You Die\, acts as emcee. After an introduction by Jim\, the presenters each have five minutes to convince the audience that the book they are championing is definitely worth reading (or rereading) and should be on the list of Books to Read Before You Die. They can talk\, sing\, read excerpts from their books\, do somersaults—pretty much anything short of taking their clothes off. But they have to stop at the end of five minutes. After hearing all five presentations\, audience members get to vote for the book they most want to read. Jim entertains the audience while votes are tabulated. Following the competition\, audience members can buy copies of 1\,000 Books to Read Before You Die and the 2020 1\,000 Books Page-A-Day Calendar as well as copies of all five of the books on the program. \nThe winner of the Battle gets bragging rights and a signed copy of 1\,000 Books to Read Before You Die. The runner-up is guaranteed a chance to return to compete in the venue’s next Battle of the Books. \n

Waldo hunters who find him in 10 places will receive a “I Found Waldo” button and a $1 coupon for any Waldo book. Those who find him in at least 20 places will be entered into a drawing for some great prizes\, which will be held at the store on July 31 at 3 pm (but you don’t have to be present to win).

SUMMARY:Nadine Strossen Author Talk and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an Author Talk by Nadine Strossen\, professor of Law at New York Law School. \nIn her new book HATE: Why We Should Resist it With Free Speech\, Not Censorship Nadine Strossen\, president of the ACLU from 1991 to 2008\, argues that expanding free speech\, not limiting it\, is the solution for changing the hearts and minds of those who espouse hateful ideologies. She dispels many of the myths and misunderstandings that have permeated the debates about what constitutes “hate speech\,” including what is and isn’t protected language\, and affirms that we don’t have to choose between civil rights and civil liberties\, or between free speech and equality. Strossen’s powerful argument promises to elevate the conversation around why freedom of speech cannot mean freedom to express popular sentiment only. We must tolerate all speech even when it supports intolerance\, or we may find we’ve given away our own right to speak against it. Nadine Strossen is a renowned public speaker\, committed to the freedoms enshrined in the Constitution. \nThis program is co-sponsored by Books on the Common\, Ridgefield Historical Society\, Keeler Tavern Museum and the Library. \nNadine Strossen dedicates her talk at the Ridgefield Library to the memory of her dear friend\, Mary Rindfleisch. \nPlease register. \nLesley Lambton 203-438-2282 lalambton@ridgefieldlibrary.org \n\nMain Program Room

SUMMARY:Ben Goldfarb Author Talk and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Ben Goldfarb discusses his recently released book Eager: The Surprising\, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter. \nIn Eager\, environmental journalist Ben Goldfarb reveals that our modern idea of what a healthy landscape looks like and how it functions is wrong\, distorted by the fur trade that once trapped out millions of beavers from North America’s lakes and rivers. The consequences of losing beavers were profound: streams eroded\, wetlands dried up\, and species from salmon to swans lost vital habitat. Today\, a growing coalition of “Beaver Believers”—including scientists\, ranchers\, and passionate citizens—recognizes that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier\, for humans and non-humans alike\, than those without them. \nBen Goldfarb is an award-winning environmental journalist who covers wildlife conservation\, marine science\, and public lands management\, as well as an accomplished fiction writer. His work has been featured in Science\, Mother Jones\, The Guardian\, High Country News\, VICE\, Audubon Magazine\, Modern Farmer\, Orion\, World Wildlife Magazine\, Scientific American\, Yale Environment 360\, and many other publications. He holds a master of environmental management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and is a 2018 North American Congress for Conservation Biology journalist fellow. \nThis program is part of The Ridgefield Library’s Libraries Rock adult summer reading program that is made possible thanks to the Friends of the Library. and is co-sponsored by the Library\, Books on the Common and Ridgefield Conservation Commission.
